England v Wales to be screened live in 3D
• Match will be Europe's first live 3D sports broadcast• Fans can watch Wales and Ireland game in cinemasEngland have been accused of being one-dimensional this season but supporters will be able to watch their two home Six Nations matches in the coming weeks, against Wales and Ireland, in 3D thanks to the national side's sponsors, O2.The two matches will be screened live in 3D at 40 Odeon and Cineworld cinemas in England with tickets costing £12.50. Polarised glasses will be supplied for viewing and it will be the first time a major sporting event has been covered in this way. In 2008, the BBC broadcast one of the world's first live matches in 3D when it beamed back the Six Nations match between Scotland and England to a cinema in London. Similar sports "closed broadcasts" have been performed in the United States in American football and basketball. This is expected to be the year when 3D establishes itself. Sky intends to launch a 3D cinema channel and is considering creating one for sport. Fifa has said this year's World Cup in South Africa will be captured in stereoscopic 3D with up to 25 matches shot with special rigs.Although there are no plans to broadcast any of the matches live in 3D, Fifa said it would make a final decision in the coming months. Originally, it was intended that footage would be transferred to film and shown at public events in seven cities around the world. Analysts have predicted that the World Cup will stimulate interest throughout the world for 3D content, some estimating that nearly 1m 3D television sets will be sold in Europe by 2013."This is an exciting development," said Paul Vaughan, the Rugby Football Union's operations director. "I hope rugby fans will pack cinemas across the country to support the team and mark this milestone."England rugby union teamWales rugby union teamIreland rugby union teamSix Nations rugbyPaul Reesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
Wilkinson overshadowed on return
Saracens 28-9 ToulonJonny Wilkinson will not remember his first club return to English soil since his move to France with any great affection. Toulon may ultimately still scramble into the Amlin Challenge Cup knock-out stages depending on results next week but the World Cup-winning fly-half was powerless to prevent Saracens from extending their qualification hopes for a few more days.Wilkinson did contribute an early drop-goal and a couple of well-struck penalties but otherwise had scant opportunity to impress the watching England manager, Martin Johnson. Instead it was the home fly-half, Derick Hougaard, who dominated proceedings, kicking 20 points in a stuttering contest which took a long time to warm up. Saracens, even so, will be scuppered if Toulon score a four-try bonus point win at home to Castres next weekend.Four penalties from Hougaard and a close-range drop-goal by Justin Marshall gave the home side a 15-9 half-time lead, the brightest attacking play coming from Alex Goode, the young full-back whom Brendan Venter expects to inherit Wilkinson's No10 England jersey in the future. Apart from one athletic restart catch from Steve Borthwick and a nice one-handed offload from the South African-reared English Saxons centre Brad Barritt, there was precious little else to enthuse about.Things livened up when Toulon were reduced to 13 men in the third quarter, when the Scottish referee, Neil Paterson, sent both flankers to the sin-bin for ball-killing and preventing a quick tap respectively. In their absence, Sarries finally forced their way over the line through Justin Melck but never displayed the attacking edge which might have earned them a bonus point. The final quarter was dominated by the visitors, seeking the late try that would have made life even tougher mathematically for Sarries, who face Rovigo next Saturday in their final pool fixture. It did not come but Johnson's primary concern was to see both Wilkinson and Borthwick walk off the field uninjured. Both duly did so, leaving the England management grateful for small mercies.Borthwick may not yet have been confirmed as his country's Six Nations skipper but the dressing-room is not stuffed full of alternatives."He's everything I want in a captain," said Saracens' director of rugby Brendan Venter. "If we end up having a good season it'll be because of Steve Borthwick." Venter also called Wilkinson "one of the five best rugby players in the world."Saracens Goode (Cato, 60); Penney, Ratuvou, Barritt, Wyles; Hougaard, Marshall (De Kock, 59); Gill, Brits (Ongaro, 65), Nieto (Mercey, 51), Borthwick (capt), Ryder (Vyvyan, 51), Melck, Saull, Joubert (Barrell, 67). Fans owe a massive debt to Wayne Rooney for reaching summit
A one-man team? That is a big question to ask, given that Manchester United, for all their flaws, sit proudly atop the Barclays Premier League this morning. Sir Alex Ferguson, naturally, would bristle at such a suggestion and Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs, among others, might well consider it an insult. feeds.timesonline.co.uk |
