Contador: Tall tale or truth?
By JOHN LEICESTER 2010-10-02T09:25:05ZPARIS (AP) -- Tour de France champion Alberto Contador's explanation that a suspect filet mignon caused his positive doping test is either a true story or a very clever excuse that could be hard to disprove. McGoldrick may earn late gold medal
• Champion Manju Wanniarachchi tests positive for nandrolone• Wales' McGoldrick lost to Sri Lankan on countback in DelhiNewport's Sean McGoldrick could be in line for a belated upgrade to a Commonwealth Games gold medal after the bantamweight champion Manju Wanniarachchi failed a drug test.McGoldrick, 18, suffered a narrow countback defeat to Wanniarachchi in the final in Delhi but the Sri Lankan now faces being stripped of his medal.Wanniarachchi, who returned home a national hero after becoming Sri Lanka's first boxing gold medallist in 72 years, has tested positive for nandrolone. He has 14 days in which to request a test of the 'B' sample.Reports in Sri Lanka say Delhi officials have already informed the Sri Lankan Olympic Committee of the findings. Wanniarachchi this week pulled out of next month's Asian Games, citing injury. After his defeat in Delhi, McGoldrick, who performed above expectations to reach the final, said: "I'm a little disappointed. I was one point away from gold but I tried my best and I'm over the moon with silver."Today his coach, Tony Williams, said: "I thought Sean had done enough to win the gold medal on the day. We will have to wait and see what happens but Sean would be a very deserving gold medallist."Two Nigerians tested positive during the Delhi Games. Osayemi Oludamola was stripped of the 100m gold medal and her compatriot Sade Abugan lost two silver medals. Both tested positive for DMAA.Commonwealth Games 2010Drugs in sportBoxingguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
