Frank Arnesen could be under threat if understudies fail to deliver
Carlo Ancelotti is preparing to put his neck on the line by trusting Chelsea’s title challenge to a pair of inexperienced strikers in Daniel Sturridge and Fabio Borini over the coming weeks, but if all goes wrong, it is likely to be the head of Frank Arnesen on the Stamford Bridge chopping block.

Mercedes presents Germany's new national F1 team, made in England
• Michael Schumacher and Mercedes-Benz united• Team continues to be based in NorthamptonshireThe cars may be designed and built in Oxfordshire and the engines made in Northamptonshire, but no one attending today's official launch of the new Mercedes grand prix project was left in any doubt about one fact of life: the reunion of Mercedes-Benz and Michael Schumacher represents the creation of a Deutsche nationalmannschaft – a German national team.Dr Dieter Zetsche, the walrus-moustached chief executive of Daimler-Benz, Mercedes's parent company, used that exact phrase while presenting the new line-up to an audience including Ross Brawn, the Englishman whose organisational skills revived the team to such remarkable effect. Brawn will no longer have the pleasure of seeing his name over the factory gates but he will continue to direct the fortunes of the team's silver-painted cars and their two German drivers from the headquarters in Brackley, where the vast majority of the 450 workers are British.Schumacher is clearly taken with the idea of flying the flag. Today the seven-times world champion, making a return to the sport at the age of 41, light-heartedly suggested that Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, might be persuaded to change the colours of the national standard from black, red and gold. "It must be silver," he said. His new team-mate, Nico Rosberg, is another of the half-dozen German drivers expected to compete in Formula One this year. "It's a fantastic thing," he said of the idea of a national team. And we are a little bit up against an English team..." He was referring to McLaren, where Lewis Hamilton will be joined by Jenson Button in an all-British alliance of world champions. So much for globalisation. Perhaps grand prix racing is returning to the patriotism evident in the days when racing teams ran in their national colours: blue for France, red for Italy, green for Britain and so on. It was Mercedes who, in the 1930s, changed Germany's colour from white to silver by stripping the paint from their cars in order to save weight. By evoking that bare-aluminium look, the new team has raised expectations of rediscovering the old formula for world domination.Michael SchumacherMercedes GPFormula OneMotor sportRichard Williamsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
