England look to the heavens for salvation after Graeme Smith's century
At 2.15pm a sepulchral gloom descended on Johannesburg, through which not even the ground’s floodlights could make an impression. It was brightened only by the occasional flash of lightning, as the most magnificent electric storm, apocalyptic in its intensity, reduced the ground to a lake within minutes, thus stopping South Africa’s victory charge for more than three hours.

Schumacher plans long stay at Mercedes
• Schumacher says 'after three years it need not be the end'• Admits idea of comeback first floated 'two years ago'Michael Schumacher has suggested he could be set for a long-term stay with Mercedes beyond his new three-year contract.Schumacher, who appeared at the Mercedes GP livery launch on Monday, told German newspaper Bild that his return to the sport was a serious attempt to regain his former dominance, and that "after three years it need not be the end".Responding to seperate reports that his comeback had been a long time in the making, rather than a surprise decision to step in when Jenson Button left for McLaren on 18 November, Schumacher admitted the idea had been floated before.Schumacher said Ross Brawn had made two earlier approaches, first "two years ago" and another "one year ago"."But I was not ready then," said Schumacher. "Before last season, he told me everything about [the withdrawal of] Honda, the installation of the Mercedes engine. I politely listened and then said 'Have fun with it!'"Schumacher said the idea had then been floated again last June, "but mostly it was joking than anything else"."Serious proposals were made after the end of the season," the German added. "The start was really after the last race in Abu Dhabi. It was at the celebration dinner with a good cigar. I said to him 'Are you sure you want to ask this question seriously?' And then he said 'If you are motivated, I have absolutely no concerns'."Michael SchumacherMercedes GPFormula OneMotor sportguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
