England promise to bounce back
• Kevin Brown insists disallowed try against NZ was fair• 'We can't afford to give 12-point leads'England moved on to the second leg of their Four Nations campaign today, still smarting from their defeat by New Zealand but determined to bounce back against Australia.Controversy continued over the disallowed Kevin Brown try that halted England's second-half fightback as they lost 24-10 at Wellington's Westpac Stadium on Saturday.New Zealand led 12-0 after dominating the first half and extended their lead with a third try through centre Shaun Kenny-Dowall early in the second half. England scored tries through James Roby and Gareth Widdop to cut the gap to eight points and were denied a third by the video referee, Bill Harrigan, before Benji Marshall sank them with a fourth Kiwi try."We can't afford to be giving 12-point leads, especially at this level," Brown said. "Even though we had a good crack at it, we let them score first in the second half and that was criminal, really, against a world-class side."It was a massive mountain to climb but we showed that we had a bit of character to come back and I think, if that try had been given, it could have been a different tale. It was a massive turning point because they went to the other end and scored straight after."We had all the momentum and ascendancy. We would have scored three tries to their one in that second half and were really coming strong. It was a real sucker punch when they scored [the fourth]. We'll need to learn from that."Brown was first to the ball after Sam Tomkins' kick took a wicked bounce over the try line but Harrigan ruled that the Huddersfield player had pushed the New Zealand forward Greg Eastwood before touching down."I've seen them given hundreds of times when you are scrambling and fighting for the ball," said Brown. "When a ball kicks, the natural thing is to change your body in the direction and you can't change direction with your hands down by your side. So I was disappointed with the decision. My first thought was that I've got it down so it's a try. I didn't even think about the push."Rugby leagueFour NationsEngland rugby league teamAustralia rugby leagueguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
