Owner charged over bet on own horse
⢠Stephane Hassiakos alleged to have made £151.52 profit⢠Case to be heard tomorrow, two years after raceThe British Horseracing Authority will hear charges tomorrow against Stephane Hassiakos, an owner of Rascal In The Mix, who was beaten in controversial circumstances at Southwell in November 2008. Hassiakos is alleged to have laid bets against the filly when she made her racecourse debut, finishing fifth of nine.Hassiakos is reported to have been a non-nominated partner in the One-Six-One partnership that owned the horse at the time. According to a statement issued tonight by the BHA, he risked £513.79 and made a profit of £151.52 when Rascal In The Mix was beaten. The race made headlines at the time because the filly was ridden by Dean McKeown, who had been given a four-year ban for corruption the previous month but was still allowed to ride, pending an appeal. The Southwell stewards found McKeown in breach of the "non-triers" rules, prompting the BHA to withdraw his licence with immediate effect. The BHA confirmed last night that McKeown will not appeal against the decision of the Southwell stewards, a matter which has never been formally completed. There will be no hearing on penalty, as McKeown is already banned and, at the age of 50, unlikely to attempt a return to race-riding. "The finding will remain on file in the event that Mr McKeown wishes to be relicensed," said a BHA spokesman.Richard Whittaker, the trainer of Rascal In The Mix, has not been charged in connection with the case and has been told he has no case to answer.Horse racingChris Cookguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
