Liverpool frustrated by resurgent Reading
STRANGE to think that four months ago Liverpool were favoured by many to win the Premier League. A solitary game into 2010, their domestic season has been reduced to a frantic attempt to cling on to a Champions League place and a hopeful tilt at the FA Cup.

Australia look forward to vintage Ashes
• Prospect of Ashes revenge has Australia squad 'excited'• Ponting: 'England are definitely playing some good cricket'Australia's captain Ricky Ponting says his side are already looking forward to the next Ashes series with "a lot of excitement"."We're already talking about the Ashes this morning – that's a good sign, because there'll be a lot of excitement around," said Ponting ahead of his side's third Test against Pakistan this week."There's certainly a lot of excitement around for the players already but we'll make sure we finish off this summer in the best way we possibly can first."England are in impressive form having saved two nail-biting Tests in South Africa, where they hold a 1-0 lead, prompting Ponting to predict a vintage Ashes series."It will definitely make for a great summer next year," Ponting said. "In three of the last six or seven Tests they've played they've managed to hold on for draws like that, the first one against us [in Cardiff] and then two over there [in Centurion and Cape Town]. Little things like that, although you're never in the position to win a game, they can still be the difference between winning and losing a series, as we saw with our Ashes series."They're definitely playing some good cricket. I think overall their bowling attack has come together really well. Anderson and Onions and Swann have done a great job for them of late. Collingwood and those guys have held their batting together pretty well, so they're playing some good cricket at the moment. I must admit, I thought South Africa might have been a bit too strong for them over there."The pain of losing the Ashes in England for a second time encouraged Ponting to think about returning on the 2013 tour. He may not make it that far, but he certainly will be in charge when the first opportunity for revenge arrives at the Gabba in November and he wants his men to continue in the way they have attacked this summer."We're trying to make a statement every day," he said. "It's as simple as that. Whether it's our training or our game and our play, we're trying to make as many statements as we can as a group. The statements we've made over the last few weeks have been pretty loud and pretty clear."CricketRicky PontingAustralia Cricket TeamEngland Cricket Teamguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Team Sky triumph on debut in Adelaide
• Greg Henderson and Chris Sutton seal win for Team Sky• British-run team enjoy perfect start ahead of Tour Down UnderTeam Sky enjoyed victory on their professional debut today in a street race in Adelaide ahead of the Tour Down Under. The New Zealander Greg Henderson and Australia's Chris Sutton crossed the line first and second in a sprint finish to the Cancer Council Helpline Classic in South Australia as the British-run road team made a dream start."It's fantastic. To get a victory in our very first race together is incredible – it's unheard of," said Henderson, who is among the favourites for the Tour Down Under. "We'd talked about it beforehand – the best way for Team Sky to start would be by winning the race and to achieve that is unbelievable."It was just like we'd practised in training and when the boys lit it up it was just so fast."A seven-strong squad, including the Britons Chris Froome, Russell Downing and Ben Swift, take to the Tour Down Under start line for the six-day stage race, which begins on Tuesday.Team SkyCyclingguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
