Semenya out of Commonwealth Games
• Scan shows 800m world champion is still struggling with strain• Was determined to make New Delhi after 11-month absenceCaster Semenya will miss the Commonwealth Games because of a back injury, dealing the troubled event the additional blow of being without one of athletics' most high-profile names.Tubby Reddy, the chief executive of South Africa's Olympic Committee, confirmed tonight that the 800m world champion was not fit enough to make her return to major competition. "Caster has been experiencing back pain for some period of time and continued to have pain after competing in a cross-country event at the weekend," said Reddy. "Our doctor has since examined her and referred her for an MRI scan. This scan confirmed that she most certainly has a back problem."We are satisfied that this is a bona fide injury and as such, SASCOC and Athletics South Africa agree that we are not in a position to compromise her health by risking her competing at New Delhi."Two other South African medal hopes – the men's 800m world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi and long jump Olympic silver medalist Khotso Mokoena – are also doubtful for the Games, which begin on Sunday.Mulaudzi, whose own victory at last year's world championships in Berlin was overshadowed by Semenya, is struggling with a hamstring injury, while Mokoena hasn't trained for two months after recovering from a leg muscle problem.Semenya was cleared to run in July after an 11-month layoff because of gender tests. The 19-year-old said in recent weeks that winning gold at the Commonwealth Games was her priority for 2010 following her return. She won four of her six comeback races in Europe over the past two months.Caster SemenyaCommonwealth Games 2010Athleticsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
