Broad denies preferential treatment
• All-rounder says 'I get treated like everyone else'• Admits 'youthful exuberance sometimes gets better of me'The England all-rounder Stuart Broad has denied the former India captain Sunil Gavaskar's claim that he gets preferential treatment because his father, Chris, is an International Cricket Council match referee. "I get treated like everyone else," Broad said, as England prepared for the third Test against South Africa, which begins at Newlands on Sunday.Writing in an Indian newspaper, Gavaskar said: "Stuart's father Chris is one of [the] ICC's match referees and so the umpires are reluctant to make a complaint against the youngster. Remember the umpires and match referees are used to hanging out together in the evenings since they are in a foreign country and so forge a good relationship and obviously the umpires are not looking to spoil that by citing the young Broad for a violation of the code of conduct."The former England captains Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain have been critical of Broad's behaviour in South Africa. In the first Test, at Centurion last month, Broad confronted the umpires when he was given out after a delayed decision by the South Africa players to call for the new review system.Broad said: "I think a lot was made of the incident at Centurion. We were told that just a few seconds would be allowed for referrals and I thought 45 or 35 was quite a long time. But it was a very relaxed conversation with me just asking whether they were sure they didn't get a signal [from the dressing room]."There were no raised voices or swearwords or anything like that but I probably should have waited for the tea interval to have that little chat rather than out on the field where everyone could see it."Broad admitted that he expects to be in trouble in the future."I am sure that when the time comes – as I'm sure it will unless I get unbelievably better – that I get in a little bit of trouble. But I am sure I will get treated the same as everybody else in the rest of the world."They [the match referees] are all grown men. I think if I have done something wrong they will let me know about it. My youthful exuberance sometimes gets the better of me, but hopefully not to the extent of hitting my stumps down or anything like that." That was a reference to the Bicentennial Test in Sydney in 1988, in which his father used his bat to knock over the wicket. The England captain, Andrew Strauss, said this week: "Broady is a very strong character. He sticks up for what he believes in, and sometimes that means he ruffles a few feathers."Stuart BroadEngland in South Africa 2009-2010England Cricket TeamSouth Africa cricket teamCricketPaul Weaverguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

England v Wales to be screened live in 3D
• Match will be Europe's first live 3D sports broadcast• Fans can watch Wales and Ireland game in cinemasEngland have been accused of being one-dimensional this season but supporters will be able to watch their two home Six Nations matches in the coming weeks, against Wales and Ireland, in 3D thanks to the national side's sponsors, O2.The two matches will be screened live in 3D at 40 Odeon and Cineworld cinemas in England with tickets costing £12.50. Polarised glasses will be supplied for viewing and it will be the first time a major sporting event has been covered in this way. In 2008, the BBC broadcast one of the world's first live matches in 3D when it beamed back the Six Nations match between Scotland and England to a cinema in London. Similar sports "closed broadcasts" have been performed in the United States in American football and basketball. This is expected to be the year when 3D establishes itself. Sky intends to launch a 3D cinema channel and is considering creating one for sport. Fifa has said this year's World Cup in South Africa will be captured in stereoscopic 3D with up to 25 matches shot with special rigs.Although there are no plans to broadcast any of the matches live in 3D, Fifa said it would make a final decision in the coming months. Originally, it was intended that footage would be transferred to film and shown at public events in seven cities around the world. Analysts have predicted that the World Cup will stimulate interest throughout the world for 3D content, some estimating that nearly 1m 3D television sets will be sold in Europe by 2013."This is an exciting development," said Paul Vaughan, the Rugby Football Union's operations director. "I hope rugby fans will pack cinemas across the country to support the team and mark this milestone."England rugby union teamWales rugby union teamIreland rugby union teamSix Nations rugbyPaul Reesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Wilkinson overshadowed on return
Saracens 28-9 ToulonJonny Wilkinson will not remember his first club return to English soil since his move to France with any great affection. Toulon may ultimately still scramble into the Amlin Challenge Cup knock-out stages depending on results next week but the World Cup-winning fly-half was powerless to prevent Saracens from extending their qualification hopes for a few more days.Wilkinson did contribute an early drop-goal and a couple of well-struck penalties but otherwise had scant opportunity to impress the watching England manager, Martin Johnson. Instead it was the home fly-half, Derick Hougaard, who dominated proceedings, kicking 20 points in a stuttering contest which took a long time to warm up. Saracens, even so, will be scuppered if Toulon score a four-try bonus point win at home to Castres next weekend.Four penalties from Hougaard and a close-range drop-goal by Justin Marshall gave the home side a 15-9 half-time lead, the brightest attacking play coming from Alex Goode, the young full-back whom Brendan Venter expects to inherit Wilkinson's No10 England jersey in the future. Apart from one athletic restart catch from Steve Borthwick and a nice one-handed offload from the South African-reared English Saxons centre Brad Barritt, there was precious little else to enthuse about.Things livened up when Toulon were reduced to 13 men in the third quarter, when the Scottish referee, Neil Paterson, sent both flankers to the sin-bin for ball-killing and preventing a quick tap respectively. In their absence, Sarries finally forced their way over the line through Justin Melck but never displayed the attacking edge which might have earned them a bonus point. The final quarter was dominated by the visitors, seeking the late try that would have made life even tougher mathematically for Sarries, who face Rovigo next Saturday in their final pool fixture. It did not come but Johnson's primary concern was to see both Wilkinson and Borthwick walk off the field uninjured. Both duly did so, leaving the England management grateful for small mercies.Borthwick may not yet have been confirmed as his country's Six Nations skipper but the dressing-room is not stuffed full of alternatives."He's everything I want in a captain," said Saracens' director of rugby Brendan Venter. "If we end up having a good season it'll be because of Steve Borthwick." Venter also called Wilkinson "one of the five best rugby players in the world."Saracens Goode (Cato, 60); Penney, Ratuvou, Barritt, Wyles; Hougaard, Marshall (De Kock, 59); Gill, Brits (Ongaro, 65), Nieto (Mercey, 51), Borthwick (capt), Ryder (Vyvyan, 51), Melck, Saull, Joubert (Barrell, 67). Robinho leaves a lasting impression at Manchester City
The alluring charm of the FA Cup has always been in its ability to throw up incongruous situations. There was no upset at Glanford Park yesterday, but the sight of Robinho tiptoeing through the mud-spattered corridors in a pair of sky-blue boots is an image that will endure, particularly if this turns out to be his final appearance in a Manchester City shirt.
