Swann misses top ICC player award
• Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar made Player of the Year• Swann and Jimmy Anderson named in Test Team of the YearSteven Finn's meteoric rise into England's fast-bowling ranks has been recognised with the ICC Emerging Player of the Year trophy at the annual LG Awards night in Bangalore. But there was no success for Graeme Swann, whose initial omission from the ICC long list as player of the year brought an official protest by the England and Wales Cricket Board and forced the judges to have a hurried rethink.Swann, who is now widely praised as one of England's best off-spinners in history, was beaten to the top award by the Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, an honour guaranteed to bring India to a standstill and briefly to steal attention away from the Commonwealth Games being staged in New Delhi. Virender Sehwag, his fellow Indian, and the South African Hashim Amla were also shortlisted.Swann did make the ICC's Test Team of the Year, alongside his England team-mate Jimmy Anderson, while Paul Collingwood was named in the one-day side.Sehwag was named Test Player of the Year – he struck six hundreds and averaged 85 in that period – and the South African batsman AB de Villiers won the one-day award.Finn, 21, played in six Test matches during a voting period spanning 24 August 2009 to 10 August 2010, taking 27 wickets at an average of 21.85. The Middlesex fast bowler, who at 6ft 9in is the tallest player to represent England, has established himself as a key component in England's Ashes attack.Finn, who received the award from another fast-bowling giant, the West Indian Joel Garner, was the top choice of the 25-strong voting academy, coming in ahead of Pakistan's Umar Akmal, Sri Lanka's Angelo Matthews and Australia's Tim Paine. Players had to be under 26 at the start of the voting period and to have played no more than five Test matches and/or 10 ODIs by that time.Finn said: "It's a great honour to win this, an award I wasn't expecting, and I'm very pleased and honoured to be playing Test match cricket for my country."I've enjoyed the last few months representing my country and I hope it continues. Next up is the Ashes and I think we're well prepared to win the series and saying that we've got a settled side ready to go for this winter."Test Team of the Year: Virender Sehwag (Ind), Simon Katich (Aus), Sachin Tendulkar (Ind), Hashim Amla (SA), Kumar Sangakkara (SL), Jacques Kallis (SA), Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Ind, capt/wk), Graeme Swann (Eng), James Anderson (Eng), Dale Steyn (SA), Doug Bollinger (Aus).ODI Team of the Year: Sachin Tendulkar (Ind), Shane Watson (Aus), Michael Hussey (Aus), AB de Villiers (SA), Paul Collingwood (Eng), Ricky Ponting (Aus, capt), MS Dhoni (Ind, wk), Daniel Vettori (NZ), Stuart Broad (Eng), Doug Bollinger (Aus), Ryan Harris (Aus).Women's Cricketer of the Year: Shelley Nitschke (Aus).Twenty20 Performance of the Year: Brendon McCullum (NZ) for 116 not out in 56 balls against Australia at Christchurch.Associate and Affiliate Player of the Year: Ryan ten Doeschate (Neth).Spirit of Cricket: New Zealand.Umpire of the Year: Aleem Dar (Pak)People's Choice: Sachin TendulkarFor all the individual awards (with the exception of the Women's Cricketer of the Year and the Umpire of the Year), a long list was compiled by a five-strong panel comprising Clive Lloyd, Matthew Hayden, Angus Fraser, Duncan Fletcher and Ravi Shastri. Their shortlist was forwarded to a 25-strong selection panel. They voted on a three, two, one basis and the winners emerged.England cricket teamCricketDavid Hoppsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
