Warren Gatland warns James Hook over move away from Wales
• Hook considering leaving Ospreys, with Perpignan interested• Gatland warns move could affect his international careerThe Wales coach, Warren Gatland, has warned James Hook, who has generated interest from clubs in France and England, to think carefully before deciding whether to leave Ospreys at the end of the season in a week that has seen another row over player release.Perpignan are anxious to sign Hook, who has said he will decide on his future at the end of next month, and have promised to play him in his preferred position of outside-half.If he joined in the summer, his new employers could prevent him from taking part in Wales' pre-World Cup training camp in July because it falls outside the International Rugby Board's regulation governing the release of players. If so, it would seriously jeopardise his involvement in the World Cup, as Gatland says those players not available during the summer are unlikely to be considered for the tournament.Gatland said: "I have told James that if he does move outside Wales he should ensure that he has written into his contract the right to be released to train with and play for Wales when required, regardless of whether the dates fall within the IRB regulation."I would like him to stay in Wales because, as we have again seen this week, there can be problems for players outside the country being available for matches and training sessions. It is James's decision and he has to do the best for his family."Rugby unionWales rugby union teamOspreysWarren GatlandPaul Reesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
