Woods has nothing to prove, says Pavin
• Pavin will not reveal whether Woods is to play all five matches• Colin Montgomerie happy with Lee Westwood's fitnessCorey Pavin has claimed that despite his troubled season Tiger Woods will have nothing to prove once the Ryder Cup starts at Celtic Manor on Friday. The USA team captain did admit it would be hard to win the competition by defeating Europe for the first time away from American soil since 1993.Woods and Elin, his wife, divorced following a series of allegations regarding his private life and the world No1 subsequently struggled to recapture the form that has won him 14 major titles.Speaking after the Americans had touched down in Cardiff, Pavin said: "I think every time Tiger plays in the Ryder Cup he wants to win and so do 11 other players on team USA. All the guys want to come out and play their best golf and try to retain the trophy here. That's our goal here this week, so there's not one player who's different from another."While Pavin would not be drawn on whether he will play Woods in all five of the matches during the three-day competition his opposite number, Colin Montgomerie, did suggest that the 34-year-old's relatively poor record in the competition offers him a challenge. The Scot said: "A lot has been written about Tiger's performances in the Ryder Cup. It's poorer than his individual record which is extremely good. So we look forward to see how Tiger's going to be playing and seeing how he can counteract that I suppose. But at the same time we welcome Tiger with open arms and think it's great that he's part of this team and congratulate Corey on his selection."Regarding being the first team from the States to win the Ryder Cup since Tom Watson led the USA to victory at the Belfry in 1993, Pavin, who played in that side, said: "I think we have a pretty good squad and Colin has a very good squad. It's going to be very competitive and come down to who makes the putts. It may come down to a Sunday match, who knows? I expect the matches to be pretty close. It's hard to win over here. Anytime you travel overseas and play there is a home course advantage and that's what Colin has this week."So we have to overcome that and Team USA are going to play hard and the best they can and try to keep this trophy in our hands."Montgomerie stated that he had no injury concerns over Lee Westwood, who has not played competitive golf for seven weeks. "Lee played 36 holes over the weekend and can cope. We have no worries over fitness," he said, before adding: "It's been two years now since we were both selected as captains. Now it is upon us here, and we look forward to getting on the course tomorrow morning. These matches will be very, very closely contested. I think it will come down to a Sunday putt, and that's the beauty of this Ryder Cup. It will be extremely tight, extremely close, and that's great for the Ryder Cup."Ryder CupTiger WoodsGolfJamie Jacksonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
England to begin tour with Maori test
• Rangi Chase and Weller Hauraki included in Maori team• England to fly out tonight following Terry Newton's funeralEngland will face a tough challenge in the first game of their Four Nations tour in Auckland on Saturday week, before the tournament proper even begins. The New Zealand Maori have named a formidable-looking team including two of the most eye-catching overseas players in the Super League this season – Castleford's Rangi Chase and the Crusaders second-row Weller Hauraki – plus Timana Tahu, the former Australia rugby union international who will line up at centre alongside Clinton Toopi, formerly of Leeds. The Maori, coached by the former Wigan hooker Howie Tamati, also include three Kiwi internationals in Kevin Locke, the former Leigh hooker Aaron Heremaia and Jeremy Smith, a scrum-half who will play for Wakefield in 2011 after two years with Salford. The England squad fly out tonight after several of the players attend the funeral of the former Great Britain hooker Terry Newton, including the captain Adrian Morley, who is a pallbearer. The Maori game will be the first half of what promises to be a compelling double-header, as it will be followed by New Zealand's Four Nations warm-up against an equally tasty-looking Samoa side. The Samoans, coached by the former Queensland and Australia prop Steven Price, include eight Super League players: Tony Puletua (St Helens), Francis Meli (St Helens), Ali Lauitiiti (Leeds), David Faiumu (Huddersfield), David Solomona (Warrington), George Carmont (Wigan), Frank Winterstein (Crusaders) and Harrison Hansen, the Wigan forward who was born in Salford.Meanwhile, St Helens have announced the retention of three of their senior players following last Saturday's Grand Final defeat by Wigan. Paul Wellens, the 30-year-old full-back, who will become the club's longest-serving player following the retirement of Keiron Cunningham – and is expected to succeed him as captain – has signed a new two-year contract, as has Meli, the powerful Samoan wing who had been wanted by Bradford. Chris Flannery, a 30-year-old Australian forward, who joined Saints from the Sydney Roosters in 2007, has agreed a one-year deal.Saints confirmed contract extensions with three younger players – Paul Clough, Jonny Lomax and Jamie Foster – earlier this week. But Paul Johnson, a 22-year-old second-row who made his first-team debut this year, has been released to join Wakefield on a two-year contract. Wakefield have avoided the complication of having two Paul Johnsons, because the vastly experienced former Wigan and Great Britain forward of that name is to join the Crusaders.New Zealand MaoriKevin Locke (Vodafone Warriors), Sandor Earl (Penrith), Timana Tahu (Parramatta), Clinton Toopi (Gold Coast), Arana J Taumata (North Queensland), Rangi Chase (Castleford), Jeremy Smith (Wakefield), Willie Heta (Otahuhu), Aaron Heremaia (Vodafone Warriors), Weller Hauraki (Crusaders), Justin Horo (Parramatta), Bodene Thompson (Gold Coast), Kevin Proctor (Melbourne), James Tamou (North Queensland), Sam McKendry (Penrith), Russell Packer (Vodafone Warriors).SamoaTony Puletua (St Helens), Francis Meli (St Helens), Ali Lauitiiti (Leeds), David Faiumu (Huddersfield), David Solomona (Warrington), George Carmont (Wigan), Harrison Hansen (Wigan), Ben Roberts (Canterbury-Bankstown), Constantine Mika (Newcastle), Mark Taufua (Newcastle), Joseph Paulo (Penrith), Masada Iosefa (Penrith), Terence Seuseu (Manly), Willie Isa (Melbourne), Daniel Vidot (Canberra), Josh McGuire (Brisbane), Taulima Tautai (Cronulla), Quentin Togaga'e (Souths Logan), Frank Winterstein (Crusaders).England rugby league teamRugby leagueAndy Wilsonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
