ECB agrees three-year deal for top players' central contracts • Previous contract had sticking points such as availabity for IPL• New agreement avoids annual haggling over detailThe year-long impasse over the central contracts of England's top players is over after the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Professional Cricketers' Association struck a three-year deal.For the second time since the introduction of the contract system, there were lingering issues with the terms offered in September 2009 and the contracts remained unsigned throughout the season, with the affected players in effect working under previously agreed conditions in the meantime.There were reports that England's players felt their pay was not sufficiently in line with the Australian counterparts as a proportion of their boards' profits, while availability for lucrative tournaments, such as the Indian Premier League, were another likely sticking point.The ECB was particularly keen to lock down a three-year agreement to avoid an annual soap opera unfolding around the details of the deals.Central and incremental contracts will continue to be presented on a yearly basis but the terms governing them will last until September 2013.Hugh Morris, the managing director of England Cricket, had been eager to finalise the issue before the team set off for Australia and said: "We are delighted to have concluded a three-year deal and to have all contractual issues resolved well in advance of the Ashes tour."The terms and conditions are well structured, will encompass two Ashes series and an ICC Cricket World Cup, and will continue to offer additional rewards to players for successful team performances."The PCA chief executive Angus Porter added: "This agreement is good for the players and good for cricket in England and Wales."We are delighted that the England players will be able to focus on cricket for the next three years without the risk of being distracted by contract negotiations."ECBCricketguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
