Eastwood ready at last for Rhinos debut
• New Zealand forward had been signed for 2009 season• Eastwood given all-clear by specialist after wrist injuryGreg Eastwood will finally make his Leeds Rhinos debut in Friday night's opening fixture of the Super League season against the Crusaders in Wrexham, with the Rhinos confident that the burly New Zealand forward will prove himself worthy of a long and frustrating wait.Leeds had originally signed Eastwood for the 2009 season to replace the England second-row Gareth Ellis following his move to Sydney, but the 22-year-old was one of several overseas players who were refused a visa by the UK Border Agency, in his case because of speeding convictions. The Rhinos were sufficiently keen on the 2008 World Cup winner to allow him to begin the three-year contract he had signed 12 months later than planned, but shortly after his appeal against the visa rejection was upheld, Eastwood suffered a serious wrist injury in New Zealand's victory over France in the Four Nations series in Toulouse. That has ruled him out of pre-season fixtures against Wakefield on Boxing Day, Bradford earlier this month and Whitehaven last Sunday, but he was finally given the all-clear by a specialist this week. He will be included in the champions' 19-man squad on Wednesday and the Rhinos coach Brian McClennan is happy to throw him straight in even though he has not played for almost three months."He's a big guy but his conditioning is OK, and he's real keen to get out there," McClennan said. "The Rhinos fans have had to wait a while, but I think they're going to like him. He's barrel-chested, and he's solid, but he's quick."Leeds will also hand a competitive debut to their new Australian signing Brett Delaney at right centre alongside the veteran Keith Senior, who will make his first appearance since last autumn's Grand Final win against St Helens after some typically forthright comments in the build-up to the match questioning the Crusaders' right to their Super League place. The Welsh club are already guaranteed a bigger attendance for their first game in Wrexham than they managed in three seasons in Bridgend and are increasingly hopeful of attracting a five-figure gate to the Racecourse Ground. Ryan O'Hara, an Australian prop who started every match last season, has been named their new captain, succeeding Jace Van Dijk, one of the six players who were deported last August because of visa irregularities.Leeds RhinosSuper LeagueRugby leagueAndy Wilsonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
