SARU finally backs coach De Villiers
• Peter de Villiers keeps his job as South Africa coach• Coach warned 'improvements in results have to be made'The South African Rugby Union has finally announced its "full support" of the under-fire coach Peter de Villiers, four days after a review of the world champion's disastrous 2010 season. The SARU president, Oregan Hoskins, said today: "I am happy to end all speculation by confirming that the coaching team remains unchanged," following a meeting with De Villiers, and the assistant coaches Gary Gold and Dick Muir late yesterday.Hoskins added: "Improvements in results have to be made and the coaching staff is aware of that."De Villiers faced his superiors for an extensive review on Monday following South Africa's poor showing in the Tri-Nations. The defending champion Springboks lost five out of six games and conceded 22 tries.Meanwhile, the century-old Springbok emblem will have to be moved from the front of South Africa's rugby jersey to the left sleeve at next year's World Cup.Once the defining image of South African rugby, the Springbok had already been shifted from the left breast to the right to make way for South Africa's new sporting emblem, the Protea. The South African Rugby Union said on Friday it was "left with no choice" but to move the Springbok for next year's tournament in New Zealand. The World Cup organiser, the International Rugby Board, requires its own logo on the front of jerseys at World Cups."The decision was very straightforward in the end as our attempts to find a place for the Springbok on the front of the jersey failed to find favour," said SARU's executive council chairman, Jan Marais. "We were left with no choice and the important point to note is that this application will only be for IRB World Cup events."The Springbok emblem is the focus of passionate debate in South Africa, and has been since the country's shift to democracy in 1994.Some believe it should be discarded because of its connection with the country's racist past, when the Springboks were viewed by black South Africans as the sporting representatives of the apartheid regime.Authorities ruled the Springbok should be moved for the first time from the left breast to the right for the 2009 series against the British and Irish Lions, in the face of opposition from rugby fans who argue it is a sporting and not a political symbol. It has been South Africa's rugby emblem since 1906.South Africa rugby teamRugby unionguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
