Twice Over and Frankel give Henry Cecil Group One double at Newmarket
• Twice Over triumphs in Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes• Frankel storms home in much-anticipated Dewhurst StakesHenry Cecil completed a Group One double for the first time in his 40-year training career at Newmarket today, as Twice Over won the Emirates Airlines Champion Stakes for the second year running less than a hour after Frankel, the latest potential champion to emerge from Warren Place, had taken the much-anticipated Dewhurst Stakes. The Dewhurst did not develop into the three-way duel that many had arrived hoping to see, as Dream Ahead and Saamidd, the second- and third-favourites, struggled to get competitive on the day. Frankel, though, delivered a performance worthy of an odds-on chance, with Tom Queally, his jockey, clearly happy that he had the race under control from a long way out.Frankel stretched two-and-a-quarter lengths clear of Roderic O'Connor at the line, with another outsider, Glor Na Mara, in third. Dream Ahead and Saamidd filled the last two places. Frankel is now an even hotter favourite for next year's 2,000 Guineas, at a top-price of 5-4 with Ladbrokes.Twice Over is likely to be aimed at the Dubai World Cup at Meydan next March after his second win in the Champion Stakes. As in the preceding event, Tom Queally produced a no-nonsense ride and was never going to be caught after sending Twice Over into the lead inside the final two furlongs. Vision D'Etat, the 3-1 favourite, was one-and-three-quarter lengths behind him at the line.Twice Over is a 6-1 chance for the Dubai World Cup with Paddy Power.Horse racingGreg Woodguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
