Cavendish fails to finish in Geelong
• Norwegian 'speechless' after claiming rainbow jersey• Cavendish, Millar and Hunt succumb to brutal courseThor Hushovd claimed victory in the UCI Road World Championships road race in Geelong, Australia. The 32-year-old Norwegian won the 257.2km race from Melbourne to Geelong to claim the world champion's rainbow jersey in a brutal event which saw 79 of the event's 178 starters, including Mark Cavendish, fail to finish.Matti Breschel, of Denmark, was second and Australia's Allan Davis took third ahead of the Italian Filippo Pozzato."It's hard to understand that I've won the worlds. It's a dream. I'm speechless," said Hushovd. "I had this chance and maybe it will never happen again."Cavendish was among the pre-race favourites but a challenging course accounted for the Briton. He and British Manxman team-mates David Millar, who was second in the time-trial, and Jeremy Hunt all failed to finish."It was too hard for him [Cavendish]," said Great Britain's performance director, David Brailsford. "It was a real punchy, hard, grind-it-out type of course, he did not have the legs today. Thor does well on these courses, we have seen it before and Mark is more of a pure sprinter."Mark CavendishCyclingguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
