Leicester 48-6 Leeds
Leicester 48-6 LeedsLeeds had to wait until November last season to win their first Premiership match and, as the nights begin to draw in, they are still waiting this autumn. Four defeats leave them firmly rooted at the bottom of the Premiership and this was a worrying afternoon for their supporters. They might have expected Leicester to be vulnerable after their second-half collapse at Wasps last weekend and the champions had a third-choice fly-half in Billy Twelvetrees after Jeremy Staunton failed to recover from the achilles injury that had helped bring about the defeat at Adams Park.Twelvetrees may not be as reliable a kicker as the Irishman but it hardly mattered as the champions had secured a bonus-point with their fourth try five minutes before the break.Leicester's scrum is, as always, brutally effective and, after Scott Hamilton had broken Ceiron Thomas's tackle to scamper over for their first try, they showed their intent by spurning a kickable penalty for a lineout and a series of five scrums. Thomas Waldrom peeled off the final one for a second try and it was clear the Yorkshire side were in for a long afternoon.Lee Blackett thought he had scored in the corner for Leeds but Alesana Tuilagi was judged to have held the wing up and, although Thomas gained some consolation with his second try, Waldrom and Twelvetrees combined to send Tom Croft over in the corner. A burst down the middle from Twelvetrees then splintered the tiring Leeds defence. He was stopped but the Tigers recycled the ball and Tuilagi crashed over. Twelvetrees was beginning to enjoy himself and converted from the touchline.Things hardly improved for Leeds after the break. Some nifty footwork by Hamilton enabled Tuilagi to plunge over for his second try before Daniel Browne, Leeds's best ball-carrier in the first half, limped off. Even the satisfaction of seeing Scott Mathie prevent Matt Smith from scoring a try with a last-gasp tackle was quickly wiped out when Smith waltzed over near the posts. If Leeds thought their crumaging problems were over the 37-year-old Julian White came on to help inflict more misery after George Skivington scored Leicester's seventh. The replacement Manu Tuilagi scored an eighth try, and his first in the Premiership, to complete a grim 80 minutes for the visitors.Leeds have never won here and, on this evidence, their head coach, the former Leicester flanker Neil Back, must prepare for another long winter fighting off relegation.LeicesterLeedsPremiershipIan Malinguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
