Pepe Reina intervenes to help tip balance Liverpool’s way
Rarely has the cliché about good goalkeepers being worth at least a handful of points to their team been more apposite. It wasn’t the saves of Pepe Reina that helped Liverpool take a maximum haul from a scrappy encounter with Wolverhampton Wanderers, however, it was his hitherto unseen ability to engender match-defining decisions that proved conclusive.

Cowboys whip Eagles into submission
• Dallas beat Philadelphia 34-14• Jets continue Super Bowl run with Bengals winThe Dallas Cowboys cruised into the next round of the NFL play-offs with 34-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Texas. The Cowboys set up an NFC Divisional round clash with the second-seeded Minnesota Vikings next weekend after a comprehensive win in the Wild Card round over their NFC East rivals, the team's first play-off win in 13 years.Dallas had stopped a six-game winning streak by the Eagles six days before in the new Cowboys Stadium on the last day of the regular season to clinch the NFC East title and the home side did it again on a night to forget for Philadelphia. After a scoreless first quarter, the Cowboys took the lead with a Tony Romo touchdown pass to John Phillips only to see the Eagle reply quickly as Michael Vick, subbing on the play for starting quarterback Donovan McNabb, threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to the rookie wide receiver Jeremy Maclin. That, however, was as good as it got for Philadelphia as the Cowboys dominated the rest of the quarter and put the game beyond the Eagles by half-time.Tashard Choice drove over the line for a touchdown and the wide receiver took a one-yard pass for another with Shaun Suisham kicking both extra points and two field goals to send Dallas in at the interval with a 27-7 lead.Defensively, Dallas were on top, twice intercepting McNabb, while Vick's second scrimmage ended with a miscommunication in the hand-off to Leonard Weaver and a fumble. A 73-yard run from Felix Jones in the third quarter stretched the Cowboys' lead, leaving McNabb's four-yard touchdown pass to Desean Jackson in the final period as a mere consolation. The New York Jets continued their unlikely run towards the Super Bowl as they upset the Cincinnati Bengals 24-14 in the first round of the National Football League play-offs. The Jets, with their first-year head coach Rex Ryan and a rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez, had crept into post-season with a home victory over an understrength Bengals last Sunday in the final match of the regular season. In Cincinnati six days later the Jets repeated the feat to win the AFC Wild Card Game and advance to next weekend's Divisional Round at the AFC fourth seeds expense. It was a bad night for the Bengals' quarterback Carson Palmer who completed just 18 of 36 passes, was sacked three times and was intercepted once as Sanchez got the upper hand on the man he followed through the ranks at the same high school and then the University of Southern California. The Bengals had drawn first blood through Palmer's touchdown pass to former Jet Laveranues Coles for a first-quarter 7-0 lead. The Jets hit back in the second quarter with a 39-yard touchdown run from Shonn Greene, and Palmer's wayward throwing was highlighted when the Jets corner back Darelle Revis intercepted a pass intended for Chad Ochocinco. The resultant Jets' drive saw Sanchez throw a 45-yard touchdown pass for the tight end Dustin Keller as New York moved into a 14-7 half-time lead courtesy of Jay Feely's successful extra-point kick.A Thomas Jones touchdown run and an extra point from Feely in the third quarter opened the Jets' advantage to 21-7 before running back Cedric Benson moved the Bengals to within a converted touchdown of the visitors. Two missed field goals from Shane Graham prevented a Cincinnati rally while a Feely field goal put daylight between the sides and the Jets will now face either the AFC top seeds Indianapolis or the second seeded San Diego Chargers.NFLUS sportguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
