Manager Lawless dies at the age of 76
• Manager of over 50 boxers in a 45-year career passes away• 'He will be remembered as one of the great boxing managers'Terry Lawless, who trained four British world champions, has died after several years of ill-health, aged 76. Lawless's wife, Sylvia, contacted family friend and journalist Norman Giller today to tell him Terry, who also managed over 50 boxers, had died in the early hours of Christmas Eve after a bladder operation in Spain."I feel as if I have lost a brother," Giller wrote on the Sports Journalists Association website, "because Terry and I were the closest of friends for more than 50 years. He will be remembered as one of the all-time great boxing managers, and there will be a parade of boxing writers who will confirm that he was also one of the nicest people in the sports business."Lawless's world champions were John H Stracey, Maurice Hope, Jim Watt and Charlie Magri. He also trained Frank Bruno for many years, and Bruno went on to win the title after leaving Lawless to join the stable of rival promoter, Frank Warren. Lawless also managed Joe Calzaghe early in his career."Born in West Ham on 29 March 1933, Lawless first took out a boxing manager's licence after completing his National Service in the mid-1950s," Giller wrote. "During the following 45 years, he managed more than 50 boxers."Throughout his managing career, Lawless was based at the Royal Oak gym in Canning Town, close to where he was born. He worked closely with promoters Mickey Duff, Jarvis Astaire, Harry Levene and Mike Barrett when they were the powers in British boxing throughout the 1960s and into the 1980s."BoxingKevin Mitchellguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2009 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Adams claims second BDO crown
• Adams claims 7-5 victory in tense tussle• Chisnall comes back from 3-0 down to 4-4Martin Adams claimed his second BDO World Championship as he edged out a tenacious Dave Chisnall 7-5 in the final at Frimley Green tonight. The 53-year-old, who claimed his first title three years ago, was again victorious at the Lakeside with a fine performance in front of a vocal crowd.Adams took the first two sets to put his opponent under pressure and, when Chisnall let a winning position slip to fall 3-0 behind, the result looked a formality.Chisnall fought back to take the fourth set but, when Adams hit a 10-dart leg in the fifth, it looked as if the 2007 champion would outclass his opponent. Yet a determined showing from the 29-year-old, coupled with a missed double top from Adams, allowed Chisnall back in to make it 3-2.Adams extended his lead to 4-2 before Chisnall put together successive sets for the second time to fight back to 4-4. Adams showed his experience by fighting his way into a 6-5 lead but Chisnall scored a 10-darter of his own to take the first leg of the 12th set to tee up a tense finale. However, Adams held his nerve and found double top to take a decisive seventh set and claim the trophy.Adams, who claimed the £100,000 winner's prize as well as a £3,000 bonus for a tournament-best checkout of 170 in the match, said: "It's a lovely cheque, but it's the world professional darts title ... that's what we come here for."Dave's game is all about not letting go. He's like a dog with a bone. He maybe gave me a little too much rub of the green in the early sets but I'm happy with that, thanks Dave."The final did not quite match the drama of Adams's 2007 victory, when he let a 6-0 lead slip against Phil Nixon before winning the deciding set, but there were some nervous moments. "I do talk to myself," said Adams, "because you do have darts go awry. You think about daft things while you're playing, so you've got to keep yourself on course. But yeah, a hat-trick [of world titles] would be nice."The beaten Chisnall, who came into the event as an unfancied outsider and leaves with a cheque for £30,000, added: "I'm happy with how I played but I missed doubles and he punished me. He didn't miss many himself, he was brilliant."Dartsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Semenya must wait for IAAF decision
• Athletics South Africa hopes for 'clarity from the IAAF'• Women's 800m world champion wants 19 February runCaster Semenya will not be allowed to compete until a resolution has been reached in her gender case, South Africa's athletics association has announced.Semenya underwent gender verification tests after she won the women's 800 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin last August, following a rapid improvement in her performances. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has yet to reveal the results of the tests.Ray Mali of Athletics South Africa (ASA) said the 19-year-old athlete would be allowed to race only once the IAAF had cleared her. "We can only allow her to participate in events once we get clarity from the IAAF, not at this stage," Mali told Reuters.Local media today quoted Semenya's coach, Michael Seme, as saying she was preparing to participate in a local series event beginning on 19 February.Mali said he would push for a decision from the IAAF but until then Semenya would be restricted to training with other athletes.Semenya's father, Jacob, was also unable to confirm whether she would be competing or not. "Whether she runs or not, only God knows," he told Reuters.Neither the South African federation nor the IAAF has said publicly under what circumstances Semenya would be allowed to continue to compete as a female.Semenya and her family have maintained that she is a woman and that publicity surrounding the case has caused hardship.South Africans reacted angrily to the case at the time and the country's ruling African National Congress denounced the IAAF and ASA for their handling of the matter.Caster SemenyaAthleticsguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Manchester United storm back to top spot
WHATEVER is happening in the Manchester United treasury, whatever the discontent around Old Trafford, Wayne Rooney is keeping the champions’ title challenge afloat all on his own. Rooney scored all four of United’s goals, the last three in 11 minutes, to give the scoreline a more flattering glow than Hull or United deserved and to take United back to the top of the table. In reminding the crowd of their abiding good fortune, he also put a temporary halt to the growing Red Revolution.
