Levein draws line under Ferguson saga
• Levein: 'Ferguson has decided he doesn't want to play for us'• Struggling striker Kris Boyd dropped from Euro 2012 qualifiersCraig Levein has ended the saga surrounding Barry Ferguson and the Scotland national team, making it clear there will be no further efforts to persuade the player out of international retirement.Ferguson informed the Scotland manager once again in recent days that he did not wish to return to the fold. The Birmingham City midfielder had raised the possibility himself during a radio interview last week.He was banned from Scotland duty for his part in the Boozegate affair last year but had the suspension lifted by the country's football association.Levein's assistant, Mick Oliver, had been in regular contact with Ferguson as the manager sought to persuade the player to come back to the Scotland camp."The dialogue was ongoing, not between myself and Barry but between Barry and Mick, over the summer," Levein said. "Eventually, it came to an end, simple as that. He publicly said he was interested and I made a phone call. I spoke to him. Mick spoke to him again. Then Barry decided he didn't want to do it."I like Barry, I've got a lot of time for him. I respect anyone who takes a decision like that, it isn't made lightly. Now I'm not really interested in talking about players who can't play for me. The whole thing has been going on for a while. It was going to come to a point where it was 'yes or no' and this is it."Levein made it clear there is now no prospect of a comeback for Ferguson: "As far as I'm concerned the situation is that Barry has decided he doesn't want to play for us, so that situation is straightforward. I won't put him in the squad."Another notable absentee from the party Levein did name today for Scotland's Euro 2012 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Spain was the prolific Kris Boyd. The Middlesbrough striker was substituted at half-time during the narrow win over Liechtenstein and has endured a similarly troubled time at club level this season."For me, it was a fairly straightforward decision," Levein said of Boyd's omission. "I don't expect him to do anything other than get his head down at his club and start scoring goals there, so that he is the striker in form next time around. I have picked players on form, that is basically it."Levein has handed a first call-up to the Queens Park Rangers forward Jamie Mackie, while the defender Gary Caldwell and the goalkeeper Craig Gordon, both short of match fitness as they recover from injury, are recalled. Gordon will be among the substitutes in Prague next Friday with Levein keeping faith in Allan McGregor."No one is a bigger fan of Craig Gordon than me," Levein said. "But I find it difficult to fault Allan McGregor on what he has done for me."Spain's manager, Vicente del Bosque, has left Xavi out of the squad to face Lithuania and Scotland, with the Barcelona midfielder reportedly suffering from tendinitis. Cesc Fábregas will not feature in Glasgow on 12 October because of a hamstring problem.ScotlandCraig LeveinEuro 2012Ewan Murrayguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
