Trinity keen for Vainikolo league return
• Trinity concede Vainikolo is more likely to move abroad• Crusaders offer Gareth Raynor short-term dealWakefield Trinity are monitoring the possibility of bringing Lesley Vainikolo back to the Super League, but concede that he is more likely to move to either France or Italy when his current rugby union contract with Gloucester expires in May.Trinity are short of wings ahead of their Super League opener at Harlequins on Saturday week after the Ireland international Damien Blanch suffered a broken hand in their Boxing Day friendly at Leeds. "If someone of Vainikolo's pedigree were available during the period when Damien is absent, then it is something we couldn't dismiss," said Wakefield's director of rugby John Kear. "But my information is that his future will be sorted out well before then."Vainikolo joined Gloucester on a three-year contract in the summer of 2007 after six prolific seasons with the Bradford Bulls, and won five England caps during his first season in the Premiership.Brian Noble, once Vainikolo's coach at Bradford, is still several players short of a full squad with less than a fortnight to go before his Crusaders launch the Super League season by welcoming the champions Leeds to their new Wrexham base on Friday week. Noble has offered Gareth Raynor the chance to play on a short-term deal until the former Hull and Great Britain wing appears in court charged with fraud in April. Raynor was released from the last year of his contract with Hull last month, and is expected to join the Crusaders before the end of the week. The Welsh club are also hoping to confirm the signing of Weller Hauraki, a 25-year-old second-row who was in New Zealand's training squad for the 2008 World Cup, and have been linked with Blake Green, an Australian half-back.Castleford's coach Terry Matterson insisted that the Tigers' accident-prone pre-season training trip to Perpignan had been a success, despite returning to Yorkshire without one of his fingers. "It's not ideal, but a lot worse things can happen to you," said Matterson, the former Brisbane and London Broncos loose forward whose wedding ring was also irreparably damaged after it caught on the top of a steel fence. "I was playing table tennis with the boys afterwards, so you've got to look at the positives. It was a great trip for us, we got a lot of quality work done."Cas beat the Catalans Dragons 14-12 despite the absence of Rangi Chase, their former Junior Kiwis stand-off who was unable to travel to France after his pet dog chewed the visa in his passport.Wakefield TrinitySuper LeagueRugby leagueAndy Wilsonguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
