London Irish 40-24 Leeds | Premiership match report
London Irish 40-24 LeedsLondon Irish extended their lead at the top of the Premiership with their third maximum-points win this season, but there were times in the first 50 minutes when it was hard to tell which side was top and which adrift at the bottom.Leeds won in Reading last April and for a while they dared to dream again. Irish had taken the lead with Ryan Lamb's third penalty attempt of the afternoon, but there was an element of bluster to their play, top expecting to impose themselves on bottom. They suffered for their disdain. Irish tried to run the restart from their own 22 but Jonathan Joseph, cramped for space, was tackled into touch. Leeds drove the lineout and when the ball was eventually moved wide, Ceiron Thomas feinted inside Declan Danaher's tackle and stretched out for the line to put his side 7-3 ahead.Leeds were leading despite conceding a rash of penalties at the breakdown and scrum. The try spree in the opening weeks of the season had given way to more modest returns as sides came to appreciate that it was not impossible to force turnovers after a tackle: it was a question of the tackler getting back to his feet immediately and supporting players staying on theirs.Heinrik Fourie wrecked ruck after ruck for Irish, and one powerful hit on Kieran Roche forced a knock-on, but the game turned when the England squad flanker was sent to the sin-bin seven minutes before the interval for preventing release at a ruck on halfway. He had played the ball off his feet before being knocked off balance and over on to the wrong side, his mistake being to continue scrabbling for the ball.Irish made profitable use of his absence, James Buckland scoring a try after a series of drives before Lamb's third penalty gave the leaders a flattering 16-7 lead at the interval. A Thomas penalty four minutes after the restart gave Leeds renewed hope, but as they tired Irish exploited their stronger bench. Sailosi Tagicakibau scored two tries in the final quarter to ensure victory before Leeds had the final word.London Irish: D Armitage; Ojo, Mapusua, Bowden (Seveali'i 58), Joseph (Tagicakibau 58); Lamb (Malone 72), Hodgson; Dermody (capt; Lahiff 77), Buckland (Paice 58), Corbisiero (Rautenbach 51), Kennedy, Casey, Roche (Fisher 72), Danaher (Garvey 50), Stowers.Tries: Buckland, Tagicakibau 2, Stowers. Football without helmets? Elsewhere, it's rugby
By EDDIE PELLS 2010-10-23T18:39:50ZOn the football field, the uniform is a suit of armor that makes players feel invincible and has the NFL in a sudden scramble to make the game safe. On the rugby pitch, where the action is every bit as vicious, they've been playing for decades with little more than a paper-thin set of shoulder pads.... hosted.ap.org |
