Flynn appointed Wales caretaker boss
• Youth coach will take charge for two Euro 2012 qualifiers• Flynn leaves door open for Ryan Giggs returnBrian Flynn has been put in temporary charge of Wales and says he wants to stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis.Flynn, the former Wrexham and Swansea City manager who won 66 caps for his country in the 1970s and 80s, has been in charge of Wales's Under 17, 19 and 21 sides since 2004. He will take caretaker charge of the senior side for their two Euro 2012 qualifiers next month."I have thoroughly enjoyed working with John Toshack in the Wales set-up and feel that we have made great strides to establishing a side for the future," said Flynn. "I would like to pay tribute to the work that John has done and the faith that he has shown in me and my judgment."Naturally, as a very proud Welshman, this is a job that I have always wanted to do. I realise that initially it is only for two games, but I shall give it my all to try and achieve results and stake a claim for the job on a permanent basis."Flynn admitted he may call upon several players, including Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs, to come out of international retirement. Simon Davies, Carl Fletcher, Jason Koumas and Robbie Savage also pulled the plug on their Wales careers during the tenure of Toshack, who refused to recall Giggs despite the Welshman admitting that he would consider playing for his country again. When asked whether he would consider recalling Giggs for next month's qualifiers, Flynn said: "My telephone is always on, my door is always open, age is no barrier to me. Young or old. I remember when I was at Wrexham and we were second in the league and with 10 games to go I needed something a little bit special to happen and I signed a 38-year-old Jimmy Chase from Halifax Town in the Conference."He had been there, done it with Liverpool. He came and he played well and got us over the line. That was one of my best signings I ever made."Wales face Bulgaria in Cardiff on 8 October and Switzerland on 12 October in Basle.Walesguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds

Millar pipped to road title by Cancellara
• Switzerland's Cancellara wins record fourth time-trial title• Briton Millar more than a minute off pace in GeelongFabian Cancellara pushed Britain's David Millar into second place as the Swiss rider won a record fourth time-trial title with a dominant ride at the road world championships today.Cancellara charged through the 45.8 km circuit in the Australian port city of Geelong in 58 minutes 9.19 seconds to finish one minute 2.75 seconds ahead of Millar. Germany's Tony Martin took bronze.Cancellara, one of just a handful of riders to break the hour-mark on an overcast, sometimes gusty day, endured a nervous moment when he appeared to scrape a barrier midway through his run but was otherwise a model of control."In the end I was focused on my own and tried to really do what I can and that's do a perfect ride," he said. "I think the tactic I did for this race was amazing and ... I'm happy."The victory added to Cancellara's 2006, 2007 and 2009 world titles and also made him the first rider to win a fifth medal in the world time trial. The 29-year-old will compete in the men's road world championship on Sunday."I want a bit more to enjoy this [today]," he said. "Tomorrow morning when I wake up, then it's another day."Cyclingguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds
