Newcastle 12-46 London Irish | Premiership match report
Newcastle 12-46 London IrishA hat-trick by Topsy Ojo helped London Irish stretch their unbeaten run at Kingston Park to seven matches and keep their Premiership title challenge on track.Newcastle were left floundering as Irish secured their five-point bonus 15 minutes into the second half with some quick-witted rugby, with Seilala Mapusua playing a key part.He may not have got on the scoresheet but he was behind much of the wonderful sleight of hand from the Irish backs and contributed to at least three of the tries with some exquisite offloads.Irish's opening try was a gift as Newcastle lost the ball on attack and Delon Armitage kicked ahead, sweeping past a slumbering Gcobani Bobo before sending in Ojo.The scorer was back in again after 14 minutes when Mapusua's wonderful pass saw the winger cut inside, with Ryan Lamb again converting to make it 14-0.Newcastle had struggled for possession the first 25 minutes but their first try was a beauty. Powerful driving from the Falcons pack saw Tim Ryan almost there before Micky Young fired the ball out to Jimmy Gopperth, whose superlative outside run took him over. He then converted for 14-7.It was now a real contest, but right on half-time Armitage surged round Bobo and Jonathan Joseph stepped past Charles Amesbury's frantic driving cover tackle to make it 19-7. That looked like a decisive score, even though it was only half-time and Lamb missed the conversion.Lamb also missed an early second-half penalty but he then kicked two in three minutes and it was looking game over at 25-7. Another sublime spin and offload from Mapusua brought the bonus try from Dan Bowden, which was converted by Lamb in the 55th minute. Then Ojo simply cruised through the middle and some poor tackling to secure his third try and the Irish were out of sight as Lamb added the conversion. But there was still time for Joseph to grab his second try, intercepting a careless Newcastle pass, and Lamb's conversion made it 46-7 before Alex Tait dived over for the Falcons' second with two minutes remaining. Ramsey expects to return next month
• Midfielder is trying to get his spring back• Player training with fitness coach and feeling goodAaron Ramsey is confident he will play his comeback game for Arsenal by the end of next month, as he enters the final phase of his rehabilitation from the career-threatening injury that he suffered at Stoke City on 27 February. The Wales midfielder fractured the fibula and tibia of his right leg in a challenge with the Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross and he was ruled out for around nine months.Ramsey, 19, is striving to "get a bit of spring back in my right leg" but he has taken heart from having escaped the gym for fitness sessions in the open air at Arsenal's London Colney training centre and he has also now incorporated some work with the ball."I think I'm on track, the target is November time," Ramsey said. "I'm just doing my pre-season work now, trying to get a bit of spring back in my right leg, but apart from that all is going well so far. I've been doing strengthening exercises for a long time now and I'm starting to feel the benefits. I'm now outside training with the fitness coach and I feel good."I'm doing a little bit of ball work around mannequins and it feels great to be back outside, kicking the ball around again. I hate being in the gym. That's the worst bit about this. It's much better to be out in the air with a ball or even just running, I don't mind that. I just want to be out of the building."Arsène Wenger knows from previous experience of players who have suffered from horrendous injuries that the mental scars can take even longer to heal. Discussing Ramsey's case towards the end of last season, the Arsenal manager said: "You never know what the psychological impact on your future game will be." He continued: "Some players are never the same any more. They lose that freedom to go into the challenges."Wenger, though, believes that Ramsey is a "tough boy" and the player himself feels that his determination has been fired further by his long-term absence. "I'm a very motivated guy and I've missed it a lot," Ramsey told Arsenal TV Online. "It's made me realise how much it means to me and I just want to get back out there and start doing what I used to do."ArsenalDavid Hytnerguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
