Horner predicts final-day F1 decider
• Just 25 points cover five contenders after Singapore GP• Mark Webber leads standings with four races remainingThe Red Bull team principal, Christian Horner, has no doubts this year's Formula One world title race will boil down to a final-day decider.Heading into yesterday's Singapore grand prix 24 points covered the five title contenders, a gap that has increased by just one point following a dramatic race under the Marina Bay circuit lights. With four races remaining, the destiny of the championship remains open to debate given the seesaw nature of the season, and to such a degree that not even the bookmakers can call it. One leading chain has Mark Webber as favourite, another has gone for Fernando Alonso, while a third has them as joint favourites."I think it is almost inevitable with the way the season has swung backwards and forwards that this will go right down to the wire in Abu Dhabi," Horner said."I sincerely hope it doesn't and I sincerely hope it is one of our guys who ties it up before that. But the likelihood is that with the quality of drivers and teams involved that it will go down to the wire."Alonso's 25th win of his career and fourth of the season hauled the Spaniard to within 11 points of Webber who finished third, with Sebastian Vettel splitting the duo in second. Vettel himself is only 21 points behind his team-mate, sandwiched in between the McLaren and British duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button, who are 20 and 25 points adrift respectively. If omens are to play a part, Red Bull won in Japan, Brazil and Abu Dhabi last year, three of the four races remaining this year, with Korea the odd one out as it is new to the calendar.Horner, though, feels those successes will count for nothing this season when it comes down to the crunch. "The pace of development is so fast in F1 that we are going two seconds a lap quicker than this time last year," Horner added."So it will all be about who develops the most efficiently between now and the end of the year, and we will be pushing very hard at each of the remaining four races. But just because we have won a couple of them previously does not guarantee anything. It's reassuring, but almost irrelevant."Although Alonso closed his own personal gap to Webber, the 34-year-old Australian ultimately increased his advantage over his pursuers courtesy of Hamilton's second successive DNF (did not finish).Appreciating the weekend was his "toughest of the year", Webber was more than happy with the outcome. "I did not feel mega-comfortable for most of the weekend, but I'm very, very happy with how the race went for me," Webber said."Getting out of bed yesterday I would have taken third. It is a pretty good podium. Of course Fernando is still hanging in there, so I need to try and get rid of him somehow, but at the moment it is going OK."Formula OneRed BullMotor sportguardian.co.uk © Guardian News & Media Limited 2010 | Use of this content is subject to our Terms & Conditions | More Feeds guardian.co.uk |
